Naturally Clean Your Bathtub Drain And Get It Flowing Again

If you are awaiting houseguests and your bathtub's drain has chosen today to stop working, then there is no time to waste. Use this procedure to clear the drain and restore the water flow before your guests arrive:

Remove Standing Water from the Bathtub

If your bathtub stopped draining after someone bathed and there is water sitting in it, then you should bail the water out using a kitchen pot. The less water in the tub, the easier it will be to remove the offending clog.

Remove the Tub Stopper

To clear the drain, you first need to remove the bathtub stopper. Some stoppers can be screwed counterclockwise to remove them while others have a screw on them that you need to remove.

Use a Wire Hook to Remove Hair from the Drain

The most common offender in bathtub clogs is hair. The hair is naturally shed when you wash your hair and then it travels down the drain and becomes wrapped in the stopper, clogging the bend in the drain pipe.

To remove the hair, bend a wire hanger until it is straight and has a small hook at one end. Place the hooked end into the drain and move it around to pull out all of the hair. You will need to repeat this process many times, and you will be shocked at the amount of hair you will retrieve.

Wash and Clean the Drain

Once all of the hair has been removed from the bathtub drain, then you should clean and sanitize the drain. To accomplish this without using any harsh cleaners, you can use the following:

  • dish washing liquid
  • baking soda
  • vinegar

To clean the drain, first wash it well with hot water. If the drain is still having flow issues, then you should place a liberal amount of baking soda into the drain. Follow the baking soda with a cup or two of white vinegar. This acid-base reaction will foam and form air pockets in any clog that remains in the drain. Let the vinegar and baking soda sit in the drain for about ten minutes to complete its reaction.

Finally, you can sanitize the drain by placing a tablespoon of dish washing liquid into the drain and then rinsing it with the hottest water the tap will deliver. The dish washing liquid will remove any residual grease from the drain and make the drain smell clean and fresh.
